If you're thinking of taking a short break this spring there's plenty of exciting cities to explore in Europe. Whether you're an art buff, a connoisseur of fine wines and foods or just love to explore narrow cobbled streets, here's five of the most popular destinations for your perfect long weekend.
Paris
Deemed the most romantic city in the world, Paris is probably on the 'must visit' list of every inveterate traveller. It simply exudes culture and style and is home to some of the most iconic sights in Europe, from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre and Notre Dame. With more than 170 museums, it's definitely an art lover's dream and no matter what your taste in art you'll be spoilt for choice, although maybe a little exhausted with all that's on offer. And of course no visit to Paris would be complete without trying some of the mouth watering gastronomic delights available in the multitude of bistros and restaurants.
Rome
A true feast for the senses, the Eternal City of Rome has plenty on offer for art enthusiasts, lovers and foodies alike. There's so much to see and it's all easily accessible on foot. Start your day at the columns of the Colosseum, then head to the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and through the centro storico to the Trevi Fountain. Watch the world go by at the beautiful Piazza Navrone. In the evening head up Janiculum Hill and take in the spectacular view across the city as you sample some delicious Italian cuisine and watch the sun set with a glass of wine in your hand.
Prague
Since the demise of the Eastern Bloc the beautiful city of Prague has become increasingly popular for a city break and it's easy to see why. This huge but very charming city has a myriad of bridges, cathedrals and gold tipped towers which give the city an enchaantment all of its own. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the compact medieval centre and uncover hidden walled courtyards and their secrets. There really is something to discover around every corner.
Dublin
Dublin has a young and lively population that will virtually guarantee a nightlife that will be remembered long after your trip is over. And if the Guinness and the Blarney Stone don't loosen your inhibitions, then a visit to Temple Bar or Grafton Street will soon have you joining in the famous Irish 'craic'. But Dublin's not only for those of you who love a tipple, the centre itself has lots of attractions which can all be easily explored on foot, not to mention some beautifully landscaped parks if you need to chill after all that excitement.
Berlin
Berlin is a city with a turbulent past, but since the wall came down it's acquired the reputation of being a great party town which, like New York, never seems to sleep. Perhaps the most abiding sight of the city is the chariot topped Brandenburg Gate, but there are many other places of interest, including the Checkpoint Charlie Museum which details the history of the former divided city. And don't forget to take in one of the world renowned cabaret shows during your visit and be transported back to the bohemian days of Marlene Dietrich.
