Social Media and Your Web Page Traffic

Never underestimate the power of social media when it comes to generating a "buzz" about a particular topic. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter have done more to "get the word out" time and time again than any previously established news agency had ever managed to accomplish in the past.

These social media sites can be your best friend when striving to generate more traffic for your web page or website. It sounds like a sure bet, but there are a few things to remember when it comes creating, and more importantly, maintaining and promoting your social media pages and by extension your main site or page.

Stay Current

Maintaining a social media page can be a lot of work. You have to stay up to date and update with new posts on a regular basis. Fail to do so, and your social media site will receive less hits, therefore your main page that you are trying to drive traffic to will receive less hits as well. People are creatures of habit and one of those habits is to check and see what is new with their areas of interest.

If you regularly have something new for your followers to digest, you will have that quality traffic demographic checking in on a regular basis for updates. This will require dedication not only to your social media pages, but your main site as well.

If you have the resources, it may be beneficial to subcontract out the work of updating new Facebook posts or tweets to a third party. If not, schedule a regular time every hour, day, or week to log in and post an update. Stay on track and you will be able to increase the traffic to your page.

Watch What You Post

I know some people may baulk at "political correctness" on the internet. The internet has been a forum for free speech for years, often with little to no consequence for anonymous posters. As the years go by, however, it is important to note that new laws governing the internet continue to be put into place. In addition, you should realize that you are putting yourself, your business, your campaign, out into the public eye.

You have probably seen news reports on national television stations, or even global news reports of social media 'faux pas' made by celebrities. Your situation is no different, just on a smaller scale. If you post something offensive or abrasive, instead of a news story you may simply lose followers. This is still very detrimental to your mission to build traffic to your web page. In fact, in the worst case scenario, the offended party may spread negative gossip about you and your website or even start an internet campaign against you! I do not need to tell you the results will be disastrous to building support for your business or cause.

Make sure to edit your social media information before you post it publicly. Avoid controversial items unless you are championing a particular cause and have support from loyal followers.
