The Best Places to Experience a Gorilla Safari

East Africa offers the very best gorilla tracking safaris, in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo. The western lowland gorilla can be found in the Congo, whilst the mountain gorillas can be seen in Uganda and Rwanda.

If you want to know where to see gorillas in Africa, then the answer is Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo. Gorilla tracking is one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences known to man! There are only estimated to be around 790 gorillas left in Africa which is infinitesimal.

Whilst some travellers may be slightly surprised at the gorilla tracking fees of between $600.00 and $750.00 per permit - the reality is that this money actually goes directly into the anti-poaching movement, and to date, the results show that the gorilla numbers are steadily increasing - albeit very slowly. This is wonderful news!

The treks are worth every penny - and more! In fact, we would always recommend that one treks twice, as the first time around, one can hardly believe what you are seeing, and most people are desperately trying to film the one hour experience on camera and video, with the end result being that one misses so much! This is why, the second time around, one can simply stop and relax and watch and witness your extraordinary group.

There are around five or six groups (depending upon where you view your gorillas) and the journey begins right from the beginning! One invariably starts off walking through the African villages which is uplifting - the scenery is absolutely beautiful and the children run with you, practising their English or simply pleased to have different company! Then you walk through - in the case of Uganda - primary forest, until such time that you find your group.

The walks can take anything from around an hour to around four or five hours - depending upon which group you have and where they are. In Rwanda, you have bamboo forest and should your gorillas move to a clearing, then the photography tends to be easier. You cannot use flash when taking images of gorillas.

On my last experience, the guide spoke to us of when he worked with Dian Fossey and he communicated with the gorillas in a language that they understood. He made comforting, reassuring noises that put them at rest and you watched as they interacted with one another, enjoying the huge bond that existed between the mothers and their babies. Being herbivores, they have a gentle aura about them, despite their colossal size. In the Congo, one does not require permits to see them.

The best time to go gorilla trekking is really all year with the exception of April and May, which are the rainy months in East Africa. Having said that, you are in rainforests and therefore, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference except that it is easier to trek in the dry season.

What is the best gorilla safari? To me, every gorilla safari is simply the best - the sensation of knowing that one is merely a few feet away from these magnificent, gentle beasts who are accepting of your presence, is a humbling experience. The other thing is that we have 96 percent of gorilla DNA - and it's fascinating to observe a creature which, in essence, is so like ourselves in so many respects!

In Uganda, the best places to see gorillas are in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga, whilst in Rwanda it is in the Parc des Volcans, and in the Congo, it's in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
