The Langham London

Located in at the top of Regent Street, The Langham London has delighted guests ever since its inception in 1865. The hotel received an extensive refurbishment at a cost of £80 million in 2009, and now boasts a stunning new design and feel. There are several tourist spots in the vicinity of the hotel including the BBC Broadcasting House, Oxford Street Shops, acclaimed London theatres, the Madame Tussauds and Wallace Collection museums.

History

Built between 1863 and 1865 at a cost of £300,000, the Langham London was claimed to be the most modern and largest hotel of its era, and was fitted with the first hydraulic lifts in England, 100 water closets and 36 bathrooms. The hotel was acquired by new management after an economic decline, and became a commercial success in the following years. The Langham has been a favorite retreat for several celebrities and royalties alike, which include Mark Twain, Sherlock Holmes, Princess of Wales, Diana, Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill.

An attempt was made to sell the hotel to BBC due to another economic slump, but the British Broadcasting Corporation took shape across the street from the Langham London instead. The hotel was severely damaged during World War II, which initiated a forced shutdown. It was then used briefly by the BBC as a staffing house, until it was purchased completely by the Corporation. The property was sold to the Ladbroke Group in 1965, which redeveloped the run down hotel at a cost of £100 million. It was further renovated in 2009 to maintain its English feel and revive its grand status. The Langham London has been featured in myriad films including the Golden Eye in 1995 (James Bond) and Winning London by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 2001.

Rooms and Suites

There are 8 categories of suites at the Langham London to choose from, all equipped with modern luxuries such as complimentary internet, direct dial telephones, stocked mini-bar, in-room safe, bathroom amenities and satellite channels. The suites are spaced between 495ft² and 2540 ft²m, and are located on the upper floors of the hotel.

There are several room options at the Langham London including classic, grand, classic executive, grand executive and the Langham club room. They measure between 301 ft² and 452 ft² and are fitted with superb amenities, which include MP3 player connectivity, in-room safe, 42" flatscreen television, wireless and wired internet access, tea and coffee making facilities and premium bedding. The Infinity suite at the Langham London features two bedrooms, one of which has a four poster bed and the other is an ensuite. Additionally, is has two dressing rooms and guests staying in these suites receive a complimentary bottle of champagne, Wi-Fi, afternoon refreshments, evening drinks and entry to the club lounge.

Restaurants and Bars

The Langham London has two restaurants and one bar. The Roux on the Landau restaurant is run by a father and son duo, and offers a rare selection of wines from across the globe. The menu of the Roux if filled with succulent starters, main courses and deserts, with private dining available up to 18 guests. It is open daily from 7:00 am - 10:30 am (until 12:00 pm on weekends) for breakfast, lunch is served between 12:30 - 2:30 pm Monday to Friday and dinner between 5:30 - 10:30 Monday to Saturday.

Awarded the World's Best Bar 2013 by Drinks International, the Artesian at the Langham London offers excellent rum creations, and gets its name from the 360 ft deep well under the hotel. The bar offers all day dining and an extensive list of gourmet bar treats. It is open from 11:00am - 2:00 am Monday - Saturday and until 12:00am on Sundays.

The Palm Court is an excellent place to indulge in traditional afternoon tea, like it was served 140 years ago. It is open daily until 11:00 pm with afternoon tea served at 13:00, 15.15 and 17.30, high tea served between 19:00 - 20:30 and the champagne hour begins at 18:65 until 20:09. The Langham London also caters to special occasions and offers private dining in the Grand Ballroom, Private Carriage Rooms and the exquisitely appointed Postillion.

Spa and Fitness

The fitness studio is located on the ground floor of the Langham London and is equipped with state of the art equipment, cardiovascular machines such as cross trainers, treadmills, cycles and rowers, free weights, plasma televisions and overlooked by personal trainers. The Chuan Health Club sits on an area, which was once a large bank vault, but now features an expansive 16 meter indoor pool, steam and sauna rooms.
